The Translation Of Long Sentences In Legally Related Materials And Its Techniques

The Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights(TRIPS),as a crucial document that China signed to entry into WTO,is still of great importance today as intellectual property rights has covered a broad range than ever and became much more related to general people.Though China has enforced its own intellectual property law,related provisions and regulations are still in the process of improvement.We need a high quality translation version of TRIPS for reference to such legislation,to provide.However,current translations may not meet the standard,lacking of either authority or readability.The writer would like to stress two crucial reasons in this report.Firstly,a great number of complicated long sentences and legal terms in the document does considerably increase the difficulty of its translation.Secondly,it is undeniable that only few scholars in China focus on the language or translation of TRIPS while most of them conduct their study from the perspective of law.Based on such status quo,the writer believes that it is worth to retranslate the TRIPS and find an accurate and readable version of translation through comparative analysis with current one.The part of TRIPS translated with regard to this report is the first 39 articles,including general provisions and basic principles and standards concerning the availability,scope and use of intellectual property rights in respect of copyright and related rights,trademarks,geographical indications,industrial designs,patents,layout-designs(topographies)of integrated circuits and protection of undisclosed information.By comparative analysis of some selected examples,the writer concludes that a flexible application of translation techniques,such as sentences splitting,transformation,and restructuring,turns out to be desirablemethod for translators to come up with an accurate and reasonable version of translation that fits native Chinese expressionwith regard to the translation of long sentence in legal related materials.The writer hopes that this translation project can provide a readable translation version of TRIPS for not only legal professions but also lay men,and this translation report can bring up some enlightening advice in legal translation concerning long sentence.
