Research On Professional Ethics Of Interpreters And Student Interpreters In Chinese Interpreting Market

The focus of interpretation research has long been on the interpreting skills.But the market has a higher requirement for interpreters and the public are paying more attention to interpretation.So besides the skills,the interpreters must improve the professional ethics.Through archival research,the thesis finds out the research results of interpreter’s professional ethics.Through the questionnaire,the thesis explores this topic from the perspective of the students majored in interpreting and the professional interpreters in China.The questionnaire is based on Chesterman’s Five Models on Translation Ethics,i.e.representation,service,communication,norm,and commitment.Moreover,it refers to the code of ethics and conduct formulated by some international translation associations or organizations to design some ethical dilemmas.So the ethical conditions of Chinese interpreters can be analyzed according to their choices.The thesis finds that the interpreters in Chinese market have the basic awareness of professional ethics,and the professional interpreters pay more attention to the communication,service,and responsibility than the student interpreters.But problems still exist.Some interpreters cannot fulfill impartiality and some may offer an inappropriate price to affect the market order.The thesis also finds that there is no specialized courses on ethics and it has not been included in the accreditation tests.Additionally,the interpreter’s service awareness has changed,which means that they have made demands on the clients.Therefore,a code of ethics and conduct made for both interpreters and clients is urgently needed so that the both parties can be in an equal position,restraining and respecting each other.
