On The Application Of Relevance Theory In Government Press Conference Interpretation

With the development of globalization,countries around the world have seen greater exchanges and cooperations.As a communication bridge to connect one country with another,interpretation plays a significant role in each field and growing attention has thus been paid to its study.Based on Relevance Theory and taking the speech of 2016 Premier Li's Press Conference as an example,this thesis aims at pursuing the decisive role of general principles of Relevance Theory in guiding the Press Conference interpreting.The study has found that Relevance Theory had strong explanatory power for interpretation.Under the framework of Relevance Theory,the process of interpreting is a double ostensive-inferential activity,involving the speaker,interpreter and the audience.In fact,the interpreter plays double roles of both speaker and audience.In the process of comprehending the utterance of speaker,the interpreter plays the role of audience,and tries to find the optimal relevance according to the utterance of the speaker,thus inferring the speaker's communicative intention.When in the process of target language output,the interpreter plays the role of audience.The interpreter should take into account of the cognitive environment of the target audience,and deliver the informative and communicative intention of the speaker to the audiences in the audience's language.Government's Press Conference serves as an important platform to build our national image,so interpreter plays a vital part in it.Besides,consecutive interpreting is mainly used in the Conference,and Relevance Theory has strong explanatory power for interpreting.Therefore,the theory will serve as a guideline for the Press Conference.Based on Relevance Theory and taking specific texts as research context,this thesis is of a certain theoretical and practical value for interpreting research.
