The Report On E-C Translation Of Road Rules For South Australia In Driver's Handbook From The Perspective Of Newmark's Text Typology

Based on Newmark's Text Typology,this report explores English-Chinese translation of road rules from words,sentences and texts.The source text is selected from Road Rules of Driver's Handbook on the official website of Department of Planning,Transport and Infrastructure,South Australia.No Chinese version was available when the author started to translate it in November,2015.The report can be divided into four chapters.Chapter One is the description of the task where its origin,significance and ways to evaluate and ensure the quality of translated version are discussed.Chapter Two introduces pre-translation process,which includes literature review,relevant materials needed,Newmark's Text Typology,text type analysis of traffic rules and common translation strategy suggested by Newmark as well as differences between road rules in China and in Australia.Based on different contents and style of texts,Newmark classifies various texts into expressive text,informative text and vocative text,and proposed two translation strategies of semantic translation and communicative translation.As for road rules,the author identifies it as informative text where communicative translation should be adopted to produce on its readers an effect as close as possible.Chapter Three focuses on cases analyses.First,at word level,the translation of terminology and cultural words are discussed.At the sentence level,translation techniques are applied to complex sentences.The techniques employed include original ordering,inversion,division,embedding,recasting and combined method.When the language order of source text is as same as that of Chinese,original ordering is applied;when different,inversion.When the sentences consist of several independent components,division method is adopted.When the attribute is post-positioned and relatively short,embedding is the better strategy.When it is awkward to make sentences by complying with original order,the translator should give up former structure and sentence formation to reorganize it and make it fluent and natural.At last but not least,in some sentences,different methods could be used simultaneously.At the text level,the cohesion by ellipsis of subjects and substitutions is under discussion,followed by advises on different versions of road rules targeted at different readers.The author holds,it is important to identify the text type and adopt correct translation techniques.And as a qualified translator,he or she should read as much and wide as possible to enrich and widen his or her schema and to possess solid bilingual capabilities.In the meantime,he or she should pay emphasis on revising process which could effectively avoid disunity,incorrectness,etc..In this way a better translation could be guaranteed.
