Inheritance And Innovativeness Of Huang Zunxian's Poetry

From the late Qing dynasty,China's literary world changed a lot with the change of era.The thought of making study serve practical purposes prompted scholars to seek change in their creation.People like Gong Zizhen and Lin Zexu began to combine this concept with their poetry.And they emphasized that poetical works should reflect reality.Huang Zunxian,as a poet,was also influenced by this idea.And because of that he had already realized the abuses of the poetry of that time,he tried to innovate his poets on purpose.It is also because that Huang Zunxian had noticed that poets at the late Qing dynasty studied the ancients too much and the distance between language and words became farther and farther,he put forward the idea of"write my poetry".Although Huang Zunxian was designated as envoy of China and was sent to Europe and America,his poetry achievement is more outstanding.His theory that"write my poetry" put forward a standard for creation:study the ancient poetry properly,at the same time,try to innovate them.He also claimed that the theme of poets should be free,the content of poets should be rich and the emotion of them should be true.His poetics is very different from others' of that time.At present,research on Huang Zunxian is very mature.Liang Qichao's research on Huang Zunxian's lifetime is very early.After that,other scholars began to study his achievement and organize his literary output.Research on his master works such as Annals of Japan and Poetry of Renjinglu is very detailed.Concerning with his poetry,scholars focus more on the inheritance of his poetry and its' influence on "the poetry revolution".Actually,the concept of "write my poetry" and the behavior of collecting folk songs did not contain any idea of“the poetry revolution",although these practices were so different from the mainstream of the current poetic circles.Huang Zunxian's poetic theories and poets should be regarded as a developmental process.These two aspects get rich by both his foreign experience and the discussion between him and other poets like Liang Qichao.Huang Zunxian and Liang Qichao influenced each other in their interpersonal process.Huang Zunxian's innovation on poetry and his"New system of poetry" were related to Liang Qichao's "New thought".At the same time,Huang's poetic view and poetic creation were both based upon China's poetry tradition.This dissertation is divided into four chapters.The first chapter introduces the life story and main works of Huang Zunxian.The second chapter mainly analyzes Huang Zunxian's poetry theories,at the same time,describes the relationship between these theories and Chinese poetry tradition.The third chapters focuses on the inheritance and innovativeness of his theories and poets.Finally,the forth chapters discusses the distance between Huang Zunxian's poetic views and poets.What is more,comments their influence.
