Recently social science has gained more importance in the social and economic development. To better achieve the function of social science in the development,it is necessary to introduce foreign social science textbooks and let students have a deeper knowledge of advanced foreign social science researches. However,it is found that limited are researches on principles guiding the translation of social science textbooks and that not all of these textbooks are of high quality. Therefore, this report takes the 13th chapter of Cultural Anthropology:A Global Perspective as an example to propose principles guiding the translation of social science textbooks.According to language functions,Peter Newmark divides texts into three types, the expressive text, the informative text and the vocative text, and proposes the semantic and communicative translation theories to guide the translation of these three kinds of texts.Semantic translation requires translators to restore the original language form of the source text, while communicative translation values the information conveyed by the source text and responses from target readers.Newmark points out that the semantic translation theory should be applied in the translation of expressive texts and the communicative translation theory should be adopted in the translation of informative and vocative texts.Since the textbook is a typical informative text according to Newmark's text typology theory, the text typology theory and communicative translation theory are thus used to guide the translation practice and the writing of the report.Based on Newmark's text typology theory and communicative translation theory as well as features of social science textbooks, his report has made an analysis on the translation of the 13th chapter of Cultural Anthropology:A Global Perspective and produced three principles guiding the translation of social science textbooks. The first principle is to avoid colloquial expressions and pay attention to the selection and collocation of words, the second principle is to express in a clear and logical way,or in other words,to pay more attention to the readability and teachability of the translated text, and the last principle is to focus on the scientificity of the text, which means to be accurate in professional knowledge, including terms and cultural information.Hopefully, this research will be of some help in related studies.
