| This study focuses on the application of deverbalisation which is part of the interpretive theory.Specifically, this paper aims to identify trainees’ application of deverbalisation and its effects on performance through an English-to-Chinese simultaneous interpreting(E-C SI)experiment. This thesis puts forward the hypothesis that in E-C SI,a greater degree of deverbalisation indicates better performance.Seven trainees joined the experiment and their performance was scored in terms of accuracy, coherence, and idiomatic degree.Subjects’ deverbalisation is observed and classified into four categories:contextualization、elaboration, linking, and reformulation.Analysis indicates that seven subjects’ deverbalisation is in positive and strong correlation to performance, supporting the hypothesis in the first place.Performance is significantly and positively correlated to contextualization, elaboration, and reformulation, but data fail to support the existence of linear correlation between deverbalisation and linking. The findings above reveal to trainees that it might help improve their performance if they use contextualization, elaboration, and reformulation techniques in their interpretation. |
