As a new classroom teaching method and organizational form, the flipped classroom mode emerged in 2011 in the United States and spread rapidly in many countries all over the world.Based on the network information platform resources, this teaching mode rearranges the process of teachers' instruction and students' knowledge internalization and it makes the greatest use of time and learning resources and creates conditions for individualized learning. The flipped classroom mode emphasizes the stimulation of students' interest and it can help cultivate students' learning autonomy and cooperative innovation ability.Since 2012,the flipped classroom mode has received extensive attention at home, and its application in teaching is increasing day by day.In recent years, some achievements have been made in the research of college English teaching at home. However, the comprehensive performance of students is still poor, and the opportunities of communication with target language are limited. How to improve students' learning autonomy and to design efficient classroom to improve students' ability of comprehensive application of English is of great importance to deepen the reform of college English teaching. With the rapid development of science and technology, the network resources become the learning resources that teachers and students can fully share. Many network resources, such as the open courses of world famous schools,Chinese national excellent courses, open courses of universities, etc.have created new conditions for teaching under the background of informational age. These make the use of this mode in college English teaching possible and necessary.Applying the flipped classroom mode in college English reading teaching can guide students to complete language input and learn related knowledge points before class, and can also leave much more time for students to communicate with the target language in class so as to effectively improve the learning environment. Therefore, based on the advantages of the flipped classroom and considering the present situationof college English teaching, this paper does an empirical study on the use of flipped classroom mode in college English reading teaching. On the basis of research results, some suggestions are put forward with the purpose of improving teachers' teaching effects and students' learning efficiency. This study adopts teaching experiment and questionnaire approach and attempts to solve the following questions: 1.Whether the flipped classroom mode is effective in improving college students' English reading proficiency? 2.What influences does the flipped classroom mode have on college students' learning attitude and interest, knowledge mastery and knowledge application and comprehensive ability? The teaching experiment lasted 16 weeks and was carried out in an applied undergraduate college.A total of 106 non-English majors undergraduates from two classes participated in the experiment. The pre-test was applied before the experiment to test whether the students' English reading proficiency in the two classes was similar or not,and then two classes were randomly chosen as experimental class and control class.During the teaching experiment, different teaching methods were used by the same teacher. The students in the experimental class were taught by the flipped classroom mode, while the control class was taught by traditional teaching. At the same time, the teacher observed the students' comprehensive performance during the teaching experiment to know students' learning dynamics. At the end of the teaching experiment, the post-test was applied in the two classes and the questionnaire was provided for the students in the experimental class to know the effects of the flipped classroom mode on their learning attitude and interest, knowledge mastery and knowledge application and comprehensive ability. After collecting the data,SPSS software 22.0 was used to analyze the valid data. From the analysis of pre-test and post-test data, the comparison of pre-test results shows that there is no significant difference between the two classes, while the comparative analysis of the post-test results shows that after the teaching experiment there is significant difference between the students of experimental class and control class. The improvement of students' English reading scores in experimental class is more obvious than that of the control class, which indicates that the application of the flipped classroom mode in collegeEnglish reading teaching can help to improve the students' English reading proficiency.Meanwhile, the results of the questionnaire show that the flipped classroom mode has been supported and recognized by most students in experimental class, and its application has a positive effect on their learning attitude and interest, knowledge mastery and knowledge application and comprehensive ability. This study proves the feasibility of the flipped classroom mode in college English reading teaching. Therefore, this paper attempts to give some pedagogical suggestions for the improvement of this mode and to provide the reference for further research. However, this study also has some shortcomings, for example, the number of the research subjects in the teaching experiment is limited and the teaching time is relatively short. These shortcomings influence the experimental results more or less,so in the future research they are expected to be dealt with.
