This thesis is based on the project of Unpublished Chinese Maritime Customs Historical Materials(1860-1949)in Harvard University Libraries,U.S.A.Being a member in the project team,the author is responsible for the translation of the materials from 1886 to 1949.In translating historical materials,the selection of professional vocabularies and proper nouns has played an essential role in conveying information.In this report,the author selects some vocabularies with confused meanings and similar versions.These vocabularies are classified into professional vocabularies and proper nouns,and are subdivided into terminologies and words used in certain professions,names of places,official titles and departments.To ensure the accuracy of the versions,the proper translation strategies are employed in the extensive research,detailed comparison and thorough analysis of the meanings.By application of Feng Zhiwei's principles,the author adopted the precise diction in translation that was made by the translation methods including literal translation,free translation,graphic translation and annotation to produce authentic,faithful and unified versions.Certain reference is made for the translation research of China historical materials and related maritime materials.
