A Study Of Dialectal Toponym Words In Zhuanglang County

Geographical name,a linguistic symbol for geographical places,is a social as well as a linguistic phenomenon with ample and specific cultural connotations.By taking geographical names in Zhuanglang County dialect as the research object,the thesis studies the pronunciation,vocabulary,and meaning of the place names in Zhuanglang dialect to reveal its characteristics and tries to put forward some suggestions for the standardization of place names for the better development of place names in Zhuanglang County.Based on the “Working Regulations of the Second National Geographical Name Survey”,this article divides the dialects of Zhuanglang County into six categories: land topography,land water system,residential areas,administrative areas,roads,streets,monuments,and tourist attractions.Nearly 2000 geographical names were selected as the research object.With the relevant linguistics and toponymy as the theoretical basis,the paper adopts such research methods as literature review,survey,description,comparison and data statistics to study the geographical nouns in Zhuanglang dialect.The description and analysis of the dialects in Zhuanglang County are the focus of this article,while the difficulty in this study is the probe into the connotations and the meanings of the geographical names.However,this article is the first study of Zhuanglang place nouns in combination with dialects,which is a supplement to Zhuanglang County's place name data and provides an objective and accurate reference for the future development of Zhuanglang place names.This article consists of six chapters:Chapter One is an introduction.Firstly,it introduces the geographical location,historical evolution and population profile of Zhuanglang County.Secondly,it reviews and analyzes the previous research results and the current research status of Zhuanglang place names.Then it explains the research object,research method,research significance and source.Chapter Two is the phonetic analysis of dialect and geographical names in Zhuanglang County.It introduces the phonological tone of Zhuanglang County dialect,the corresponding relationship between Zhuanglang dialect and Beijing Mandarin,and the phonological characteristics of Zhuanglang dialect,which explains the sound change of place names from spoken to written form to provide the basis for the understanding of the tone variations,rhotic accent and assimilation in place names.In addition,the composition of syllables and oblique and level tones of place names in Zhuanglang dialect are analyzed.Chapter Three is the research on the common and proper names of the geographical names in Zhuanglang dialect.The general names,proper names and structural forms of place names are classified and sorted out respectively.There are 62 common names in the geographical names of Zhuanglang,most of which are named in accordance to human and geographical entities.From the perspective of word formation,there are two types of place names: simple names and compound names.In terms of structural formation,it mainly includes the forms of "proper name +common name" "proper name +proper name +common name" and derivative name.Chapter Four is the rationale for the geographical names of Zhuanglang County.This chapter analyzes the geographical names of Zhuanglang County from natural factors and humanistic factors.The place names named after natural factors are mostly based on natural landscapes,geographical locations and natural resources.And the place names named for humanistic elements are mostly based on family surnames and characters,historical events and legends,even on folks' best wishes and cultural landscapes.In the process of researching the naming motives of place names in conjunction with the meaning of place names,we've found that Zhuanglang geographical names carry military,clan,religious and cultural information.Chapter Five is about the usage of words in place names in Zhuanglang dialect.This chapter firstly analyzes the word usage and pronunciation in dialect of Zhuanglang County by explaining the dialectal words and homonyms in place names.Secondly,combined with Zhuanglang dialect,the pronunciation and characters used in some place names are verified.Finally,combined with the actual situation of place names in Zhuanglang dialect,relevant suggestions are put forward from the perspective of the standardization of place names.Chapter Six is the conclusion,which summarizes the main results of this study and points out the limitations of this article.
