This thesis chooses Professor Hugengshen's translation theory: eco-translatology as the theoretical guidance in the Chinese translation studies of Patterns of Culture. As an interdisciplinary theory,eco-translatology has aroused great repercussion in the translation circle.Eco-translatology not only gives a new explanation of the nature, process, principles, evaluation criteria and methods of translation activity, but also build up a new translation theory which is called the theory of translational adaption and selection. As an emerging translation theory,eco-translatology attempts to describe and interpret the translation process from the perspective of ecology. To translate the original text into its ecological environment, readers can get a better translation.Three-dimemsional transformation are realized through translator's using of words, phrases and sentences in the process of translating. In linguistic-dimension,the adaptive selection and transformation is achieved from three levels: lexical, rhetorical and syntax.Cultural-dimensional adaptive selection transformation is realized through the translation of culture-related words,religion-related words and myth and legends.By focusing on how the translator translates four different kind of sentences, communicative dimensional adaptive selection and transformation communication between the target text and the origin text can be figured out finally. This thesis selects the Chinese translation of Patterns of Culture which has been published by Foreign Language Teaching Research Press(FLTRP)in 2015 as the study subject.Patterns of Culture,an masterpiece of Ruth Benedict, who is a famous anthropologist. It is one of the most influential works of western discussion oncultural issues in the 20 th century, which has been translated into 14 languages and has extensive influences. However, previous study of patterns of culture are mostly from the perspective of anthropology, sociology and philosophy, etc, and the translation of cultural patterns from the perspective of ecological translation is not much. This thesis aims to explore whether the translator makes successful adaptive selection and selective transformation in the translation process form the perspective of three dimensional transformation, including linguistic dimension, cultural dimension and communicative dimension. In this thesis,it proves that the translator not only makes successful adaptive selection to adapt to the eco-environment of translation in the process of translating, but also achieves the greatest extent of holistic adaption and selection in the process of translating. This thesis provides a new research perspective for studying the FLTRP version of Patterns of Culture, and hopes to provide some suggestions for the future translation studies and practices.
