Henry David Thoreau(1817-1862),a famous American writer, ideologist and naturalist,is a representative of American literature in the middle of the 19 th century. His collection of essays Walden is not only the treasure of American literature, but also the classic work of world literature.Today's world is harmonious, with increasingly frequent cultural exchanges all over the world. As the link connecting different cultures, translation plays an important role in the international cultural exchanges, and the translation of works is the most direct expression of translation culture.Previous studies on Walden's translation have mainly focused on the versions of famous translators such as Xu Chi and Dai Huan, and most of them were comparative studies from the perspectives of Relevance Theory,Functional Equivalence Theory and Reception Aesthetics Theory, etc. There is still a lack of research on the translation of unknown excellent translators from the perspective of the emerging theory Eco-translatology.Therefore,this paper intends to analyze and study Zhong Ze's Chinese version of Walden based on Eco-translatology.Eco-translatology is centered on the translator and based on Darwin's theory of biological evolution. It is considered to be the translators' selective activity to adapt to the translational eco-environment.Eco-translatology points out that translation needs to be placed in a systematic ecological environment, and the emergence of this theory greatly increases the scope of translation studies and provides a new direction for translation studies.Based on Eco-translatology and the specific research background, research significance and purposes, this paper analyzes Zhong Ze's Chinese version of Walden by means of literature research, case analysis and data collation. This paper expounds the Eco-translatology and the domestic and foreign research and current status of the versions of Walden. Then it gives an overview of the eco-environment involved in Zhong Ze's Chinese version of Walden. After that,it analyzes how the Zhong Ze's Chinese version of Walden realizes the three-dimensional transformation under the perspective of Eco-translatology in detail. Finally,it gives the major findings, research limitations and suggestions for future research. This study shows that it is feasible to analyze Zhong Ze's Chinese version of Walden with Eco-translatology.Even under the influence of different translational eco-environment,the translator Zhong Ze can always achieve the adaptive selection among linguistic dimension, cultural dimension as well as communicative dimension, which makes the version more vivid. That is why Zhong Ze's Chinese version of Walden is called “the most beautiful translation”.The significance of this paper mainly lies in promoting further development and improvement of Eco-translatology by applying it to specific translation studies, deepening readers' understanding of Walden to strengthen cultural exchanges between China and the West and calling on readers to pay more attention to the outstanding translators who are not well-known at home and abroad.
