Vocabulary is one of the three major elements of language.Vocabulary teaching plays a very important role in English teaching in primary school.In teaching process,many teachers find ways to improve the effectiveness of vocabulary teaching.However,most students are still not interested in vocabulary learning,and they hold that it is boring to recite words and easy to forget.At the same time,teachers in primary school cannot improve students' interest in vocabulary learning.Therefore,the situation of English vocabulary teaching in primary school is not optimistic.It is imperative to explore an effective method to improve students' vocabulary learning interest and their vocabulary proficiency.The application of Story Teaching Method in the field of education has been proved to be one of the effective and creative teaching methods.With the development of the research,the advantages of Story Teaching Method is proved,but the application of it in vocabulary teaching for primary school students is still blank.This study takes the vocabulary teaching in primary school as the research direction,and aims to answer the following questions:1.Can Story Teaching Method improve the students' interest in learning English vocabulary?2.Can Story Teaching Method improve the students' vocabulary proficiency?The study lasts for 18 weeks(from September 2017 to January 2018)in Jieyuan Primary School of Shanxi province and participants are students who are in two parallel classes from Grade Four and two English teachers of this school.The two teachers mainly work with the author to design stories and one of them also teaches in both Control Class(CC)and Experiment Class(EC).The total number of the student participants is 82 and Class One with 40 students is selected as EC and Class Two with42 students is selected as CC.The teaching material is PEP,published by People's Education Press.Both CC and EC are taught by the same teacher but based on the different teaching methods.The students in CC are taught by traditional teaching method while the students in EC learn by means of Story Teaching Method.All the data is collected through pre-questionnaire,post-questionnaire,pre-test,post-test and analyzed by Microsoft Office Word 2007 and SPSS 19.0 statistical software.Andinterview is as supplementation at the end of the experiment to obtain more information about students' attitude to Story Teaching Method.After the experiment,it is found that the interest of students in experiment class in learning English words is greatly improved,and their vocabulary achievements are also better than that of control class.However,due to the limitations of this research,the author hopes further research can be conducted effectively to provide more practical suggestions for Story Teaching Method.
