| Based on relevance theory,this paper analyzes the interpreter’s liaison interpreting for the agricultural investigation for experts from the Ministry of Agriculture in Iran and Chinese researcher from the Institute of Cotton Science Research in Hunan and explores the difficulties and challenges the author encounters in this task.The author understands the communicative purpose of the speaker and try to maximize the audience’s context effect and reduce their processing effort considering the disparity of cognitive background between the speaker and the audience in order to achieve the communicative purpose.In this paper,the author classifies the mistakes she made in this task into two types according to the interpreting process:lack of relevance in the interpreter’s inferential process and lack of relevance in the interpreter’s ostensive process.In interpreting there are three parts,namely the speaker,the interpreter and the audience,whose verbal communication includes ostensive-inferential actions.From the perspective of the interpreter,she makes inference from the speaker’s speeches in the source language and makes ostensive speeches by conveying the information to the audience in the target language.In the interpreter’s inferential process,both the lack of ostension by the speaker and discrepancy in context between the speaker and the interpreter will lead to lack of relevance.Lack of ostension,underinformativeness and overinformativeness by the interpreter will cause lack of relevance in the interpreter’s ostensive process as well.This paper analyzes each type and gives coping strategies correspondingly in the hope of providing reference for liaison interpreting research and practice in related field in the future. |
