This translation report is a review and summary of the translation practice of the chapter four and chapter five of Mayo Clinic on Healthy Aging.Mayo Clinic is a comprehensive medical center with a long history in the United States. Two medical experts from the center provide a detailed and scientific explanation of aging. They give more scientific advice to the old and those who are going to be old. This book, published by Rosetabooks in June 2014,has no Chinese version.Given the book has an important value,my translation group decided to translate it into Chinese by its electronic version in 2015.The author of the report was assigned to translate the fourth chapter(Slow the Flow)and the fifth chapter(Respond to Your Risks).Chapter 4 is about the changes of many aspects of the body and relevant measures.Chapter 5 is about how to deal with the changes caused by aging and how to avoid health risks.According to Reiss' text typology,Mayo Clinic on Healthy Aging as the source text is categorized into an informative plus operative text.Informative texts require the translation be made in “plain prose” to reach “explicitation as required”,while operative texts call for “adaptive” and “equivalent effect” translation.Being guided by this theory through the whole process of the translation practice, the author, after frequent revisions and improvements, accomplishes the translation. The report has four parts, including description of the translation task, the translation process, the analyses of translation examples, and conclusion. The first part consists of the origin of the task, brief introduction of the text, and the meaning of the task. The second part consists of the preparation of the task and the translation process of three drafts. The third part is the analyses of the examples, and it is the core of the report. The translator analyzed how to keep the information and function of informative and operative texts in translation with different translation methods. The final part is the review of translation problems and relevant measures, and inspiration for the future translation.
