The development of economic globalization has made English the world language, and English learning has been attached great importance. But many rural primary schools still apply the traditional teaching meth-od which teaching effect is not so satisfactory.Having searched for the relevant data, the author found that the activities-based approach(a kind of teaching method which suggests that teachers should vary the teaching organization by telling stories, singing English songs, doing group activities and having pair works under given teaching context)is a new teaching method that is suitable for elementary schools' English teaching. In order to verify whether the activity teaching method was helpful for elementary school students, the author conducted an experiment on the sixth grade students of a rural primary school in Yu'an District for a semester.Experimental subjects were 75 students in the sixth grade of our school. The author divided them into two classes(the experimental class and the control class, which included 37 students in the experiment class and 38 students in the control class). Before the experiment, the author did a questionnaire survey and an interview on the students of the two classes. When doing the experiment, the author applied the activities-based approach in the experiment class, and then used the traditional teaching method in the control class. After a semester, the author got the desired results by the final exam, the second questionnaire survey and the second interview on the experiment class students, which showed that activities-based approach was helpful for the students' English learning, the development of interest and enthusiasm in English learning and comprehensive abilities of primary school students.
