Report On The Translation Of Contemporary Confucianism In Thought And Action(Excerpt)

This translation report is based on an excerpt from the book Contemporary Confucianism in Thought and Action.It presents translations of the first,second and sixth chapters,which includes the relationship between Confucianism and religious beliefs,the relationship between Confucianism and government and the relationship between Confucianism and the natural environment.The book examines what Confucianism would be like in the future,and makes an appeal for people to follow Confucian social morality and put it into practice.This text was chosen for translation because many young people in the contemporary world do not understand the development of Confucianism and because there are many Confucian pioneers in China and in the West who have actively engaged in the Confucian Reconstruction Movement.Therefore,this book facilitates people to have a more comprehensive understanding of New Confucianism in contemporary society.It plays a very important role both in promoting traditional Confucianism and in reconstructing contemporary Confucianism.This report focuses upon background introduction,task description,process description and case analysis.Case analysis is performed from lexical level,syntactic level and discoursal level.The Skopos Theory of Vermeer was used as a guiding principle,and other translation methods were also used to improve the translation quality,such as amplification,conversion,annotation,recasting and so on.In order to obtain quality translation,Trados,a computer aided translation tool,was used to establish a translation memory and a unified term base to unify the translation of some proper nouns before translation.Because the book involves a great deal of information about historical characters,it's necessary to actively read relevant materials and related books in order to be able to accurately translate those historical events and characters' names.The target readers of this translation report are Confucian scholars,historical experts,lovers of Confucian classics and so on.The target text will hopefully give some inspirations to readers who are interested in this area.Due to limited translation level of the translator,many problems may exist in the translation.However,it is hoped that Confucianism studies of western scholars can have a good influence on Chinese readers and provide some references for the better construction of a moral and civilized society.
