This paper is a report of the author's E-C translation practice. The source text is International Encyclopedia of Education edited by Penelope Peterson. The author of this report translated four papers of the book. The report begins with basic background information about the translation task. Then, the whole process of translation is introduced, including reading the source text thoroughly, employing translation tools and theories.Translation of long sentences, the main problem in the translation process,is also analyzed.Newmark's Communicative Translation theory is introduced and feasibility of the theory in informative text is discussed. In case study, the author analyzes the differences between Chinese and English, and six translation methods, namely, reversing, embedding, cutting, splitting, recasting and inserting are employed.Specific examples are anatomized by comparing translation versions to demonstrate how long English sentences are rendered into Chinese under the guidance of domestication strategy and Communicative Translation theory.Through this task, the author finds that to deal with long sentences, one method is not enough.Supplementary methods are needed to achieve a comparatively satisfying version. In the meanwhile, due to the fact that there are some relevant translation techniques required by a given method, one should,on the basis of respecting the source text, apply some necessary techniques to make the version comply with Chinese way of expression.Besides, though Communicative Translation theory gives a translator freedom to dispose the target text, the source text and translation purposes should always guide translation process.Only in this way will the target version be communicative.
