New curriculum reform has been implemented for years,but under the influence of traditional teaching methods and the examination-oriented education,the English homework assignment at senior middle schools still follows the principle of quantitative repetition,which features simple and mechanical pattern of mountains of monotonous homework.This simple and crude homework design,not only inhibits the students' interest in learning English,limits the students' autonomy and creativity while learning to a large extent,but also restricts the student's development,and more importantly the overall development of students.The traditional homework design goes against the spirit of the new curriculum reform and the concept of quality education;what's more,it is not consistent with the concept of developing the core competence of students,and is contrary to the humanistic educational theory.Through the investigation and study of high school English assignment,the thesis aims to achieve the following purposes: to explore the current situation of high school English assignment and their problems;to analyze the causes of these problems and present the requirements and principles to follow while designing the scientific and reasonable high school English homework;to give model examples of optimized design for high school English assignment.Based on literature review,this thesis adopts the advanced educational theory both at home and abroad,and introduces the humanistic educational idea to the optimized homework design.The research methods adopted include literature review,questionnaire survey and interviews so as to understand the current situation of high school English assignment.The data from questionnaires of 325 students and interviews with eight English teachers show that there are many problems in the current high school English assignment.The major problems can be listed as follows: the value of high school English homework is not truly noticed;the amount and difficulty of the homework are not reasonable;the type of the homework are not varied;the content is rigid and boring;as for the evaluation structure of senior high school English homework,it is lacking in flexibility;The design of the senior high school English homework is not planned ahead of time and the consciousness of humanism education is not strong.The reasons for the above problems are mainly reflected in the following aspects: in the aspect of educational system,the current education evaluation system hasn't been radically reformed,the university enrollment system is kind of unfair,and the design of the High English homework doesn't get enough attention from the education authorities.About the teachers,they are facing great pressure from school and society,they are lacking in guidance and training on optimized homework design,teachers of different subjects do not communicate and cooperate with each other well,and many teachers have superstition about the effect of "Mountainous homework" and "do exercises in large amount",they lack the knowledge of Humanism Education theory,and some of the teachers do not have proper professional attitude.As to the students,the individual difference is the major contributor to the current unreasonable homework.According to the analysis above,the research sums up eight principles of high school English assignment: the principle of subjectivity,the principle of development,the principle of interest,the principle of typicality,the principle of stratification,the principle of diversity,the principle of cooperation and the principle of practice.At last,three optimized design of Senior English assignment are put forward,which are listed as follows: practical homework,synthetic homework and autonomous homework,which may provide a useful reference and guidance for education authorities,middle school teaching and research departments,and high school English teachers to set English assignments.
