Assignment is an integral part of the teaching process.It is an indispensable method to understand,consolidate,and apply the knowledge learned in the classroom.It is also an effective form of cultivating and improving the self-study ability and practical ability of the senior high school students.In the same way,the English assignment in the urban senior high schools in GZ city plays an important role in English teaching in GZ.However,there are still many problems existing in the design of the current English assignments in the urban senior high schools in GZ City.To throw light on these problems,this thesis tries hard to do an investigation on the status of English assignment in urban senior high schools in GZ.First,this thesis elaborated on the definition of assignment,research status at home and abroad,and the theoretical basis on which this thesis is based.Then,300 students and some teachers from 3 senior high schools in GZ are chosen and invited to help to do this investigation,so as to ensure the authenticity and effectiveness.During the research,questionnaires,interviews,and case collection methods serve as research instrument,to find out the problems existing in the current arrangement of the English assignments in the urban senior high schools in GZ City.This investigation begins mainly with four aspects of senior high school English assignments: workload of English assignments,the form of the English assignments,the content of English assignments,and the aim of English assignments.After analyzing the results of the questionnaires,interviews,and the collected cases,some problems were found in the design of senior high school English assignments.Firstly,the amount of the assignment is large.Secondly,the content of the assignment is dull and repetitive.Thirdly,the form of the assignment is boring and tedious.Last,the aim of the assignment is undefined.Therefore,the function of English assignment has not been fully utilized.To solve the problems existing in senior high school English assignments,thedesign of English assignments was discussed in combination with the general high school English curriculum standards.The starting point of the research is to reform the assignments and improve the proficiency of English assignments and to reform the content and format of English assignments.Based on the Multiple Intelligence theory,several feasible assignment designs are proposed.The research of English assignment not only can prompt teachers to change the traditional concept of English teaching and the traditional English teaching model,but also can prompt students to change their attitudes towards English assignment,take the initiative to complete assignment,improve their language skills,and lay the foundation for lifelong learning.In conclusion,this research provides some inspiration for the arrangement and design of English assignments in GZ city.But there are still some contents waiting to be improved in senior high school English assignments,which will surely benefit both English teachers and learner a lot.
