With the progress of the new English curriculum reform,and the proposal of English Curriculum Standards,the English teaching aims is to foster students' comprehensive ability of using language synthetically in the phase of basic education by achieving the five curriculum goals: language knowledge,language skills,emotional attitudes,learning strategies and cultural awareness.English assignments serve as an effective addition to classroom teaching and are an important part of English teaching.Besides,it can help students to fulfill the above goals.However,the traditional English homework is not suited to requirements of the new curriculum reform and it must be amended.The purpose of this paper is designed to improve the design of high school English assignments,explore effective methods of designing high school English assignments and put forward the idea of improving the quality of assignments to reduce the students' heavy burden,help students to arouse their interests in English learning,have them foster a better learning style and English sense and enhance their ability to learn and use English appropriately.In order to make a thorough survey of the homework design in senior high school,under the guidance of English curriculum standards,this paper absorbed the advanced educational theory and introduced Multiple intelligences,constructivism and second language acquisition theory into English homework design and adopted such research methods such as data studies,questionnaire surveys and interview.Through the questionnaire on three different grades in two senior high schools and the interview with 12 students,it was found that there existed some problems in English homework.There was so much homework that students spent too much time to complete it;homework over attach to the content of class teaching with simple forms;the training exercise is stiff and lack of flexibility;writing homework is more than oral homework;and more jobs less verbal and in addition,the methods teachers used to assess homework were not reasonable.To solve these issues,combining modern educational theories and guiding ideas of new course theory,the thesis put forward the new assignment mode,that is,the content of assignment should be interesting and related to the students' real life,reflecting the practical principle.Besides,in order to guarantee the diversity of assignment,it should follow the principle of written assignment complement the oral assignment to design it.In addition,the author suggested that teachers should adopt various strategies to assess homework.Besides the product of assignment,the process should also be paid attention to.This thesis will be able to provide English teacher in high schools with various suggestive types of English assignment which prompted them to optimize homework,so that students can get the comprehensive development as well as improving their English quality.
