When doing consecutive English-Chinese interpretation, interpreters often tend to interpret source language word by word, which results in rigid target language. What’s more, interpreters fail to convey speaker’s intended meanings. The Interpretive Theory of Translation was born in France and has been a focus in the study of interpretation in western countries since. It also has brought a remarkable turning point to the theoretical development in interpretation in China and has been widely regarded as an important guiding theory in interpretation teaching and practice. The Interpretive Theory of Translation encourages deverbalization and helps interpreters avert word-for-word interpreting in order to facilitate the communication between presenters and audience. This report on the simulated interpreting practice is based on Mark Elliot Zuckerberg’s speech at Harvard University under the guidance of the Interpretive Theory and aims to account for its practical function in interpreting practice, check the author’s two-year interpreting learning outcome, point out the author’s shortcomings because of violation of the Theory and make suggestions for the author and other interpreting learners. This report is divided into five parts:The first part illustrates this interpreting practice;the second part describes the process of this simulated interpreting practice;the third part is the introduction to the theoretical basis of the thesis;the fourth part presents some case studies of this interpreting practice and the last part sums up the shortcomings of this interpreting practice and provides corresponding remedies.
