Discussion On The Events Of Recognition On Events Of Spring And Autumn Annals Of Du Yu

On the interpretation of Spring and Autumn,“explaining classics with events” was an important interpretation method,which originally derived from the study of Gong Yang.At the end of Western Han Dynasty,in order to prove that Zuo Zhuan was a work of interpretation of scriptures,Liu Xin explained Zuo Zhuan with events by imitating the interpretation method of the study of Gong Yang.With the efforts of Zheng Zhong,Jia Kui,Ying Rong and so on,the cases about Zuo Zhuan gradually been supplemented and tended to reach perfection.During the Western Jin Dynasty,Du Yu inherits the predecessors’ method of derivation,and puts the historical factors into Zuo Zhuan.He constructs a detailed theory of Zuo Zhuan with events,The “events" of the Recognition on Events of Spring and Autumn Annals is the concrete practice of the theory of Zuo Zhuan.Du Yu divided Zuo Zhuan cases into three kinds,one was called zheng-li,which was the principle of writing history which was stipulated by Zhou Gong;One was called bian-li,which was the way in which Confucius expressed his opinions through the change of literary words;One was called fei-li,which only described historical facts and did not evaluate them.Basing on these three kinds of cases and combining with the historical data in Zuo Zhuan,Du Yu summarized and constructed the “events” of Recognition on Events of Spring and Autumn Annals.The “events” of Recognition on Events of Spring and Autumn Annals were a summary on the principle of recording Spring and Autumn and its implied contents,and it had forty-two cases.According to its contents,“events” can be divided into two categories: the etiquette and the military-political affairs.The “events” of etiquette were related to the etiquette system of Ji-li,Xiong-li,and Jia-li in the Spring and Autumn Period.The “events” of military-political affairs were related to the rules that which words can be chose to record the military-political affairs.In the central part of this article,I analyzed the forty-two cases one by one.Summarizing the source of each cases,its writing rules and its deficiency,we can have a comprehensive understanding about “events”.From the perspective of the study of Spring and Autumn Annals,the “events” of Recognition on Events of Spring and Autumn Annals also had its own important values.It had been the foundation of Du Yu’s study of Zuo Zhuan,and it was an important step for Du Yu to make Zuo Zhuan accomplish the jingxuehua of Zuo Zhuan.The method of summarizing the “events” and the structure of its interpretation also had a tremendous impact on later study and became a model for the following Confucian scholars.
