Deviation theory holds that style derives from deviation from the norm. For the aesthetic value and the theme, writers often create impressive expressions by consciously violating or deviating from the standard language.Deviation helps to shape characters, describe the background and push forward plots, embodying the literariness of a novel. Therefore, when doing translation, the translator should pay special attention to the deviant phenomena in the source text and reproduce them in the target text properly,so that target readers can better understand what the source text is intended to convey. This thesis chooses Jia Pingwa's Fuzao and its English version Turbulence translated by Howard Goldblatt to study the translation of deviant expressions in the source text.First,Leech's deviation category is used to classify the derivation in the source text.It turns out that there are mainly four types of derivation, namely, lexical, grammatical, semantic and dialectal deviation. Then, this thesis analyzes how the meanings, effects, patterns of the deviation in the source text are presented in the target text,in an attempt to find out their translation methods and techniques. And the reasons why the translator chooses those translation methods are discussed to provide a deeper understanding of the translation of deviation. The research shows that the translation methods that Goldblatt employs to deal with the deviant expressions in the source text can be summarized as deviation-for-deviation translation and norm-for-deviation translation. In deviation-for-deviation translation, the translator translates the deviant expressions literally or recreates more suitable ones in the target language by using various translation techniques, such as retention, amplification, deduction, modification and substitution,so as to reproduce the effects of the original deviant expressions. In norm-for-deviation translation, the translator makes the deviant expressions in thesource text become normal ones by using different translation techniques, such as simplification, normalization, readjustment, omission and substitution,so as to remove the deviant effects. After analyzing the translator's translation view, this thesis finds out that Goldblatt does his best to keep the balance between faithfulness and rewriting, aiming to convey the literariness of the source text and maintain the readability of the target text at the same time. This is the reason why he is very flexible in choosing translation methods and techniques.By studying the translation of deviation in Fuzao, this thesis also helps to solve the problem that there is little research on the English translation of Jia Pingwa's works from stylistic perspectives, contributing to future research on the English translation of Jia Pingwa's works from the perspective of deviation.
