Cooperative learning(CL)is a kind of learning modes mainly based on group activities and is advocated by New Curriculum Standard.As the New Curriculum Standard for Senior English points out:"English teaching should guide students to adopt an independent and cooperative approach to learning to improve the efficiency of learning and ensure the simultaneous improvement of language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning abilities." Many scholars and educators have made a lot of researches and illustrations about CL based on its background,elements,significance,modes as well as the participants.Some front-teachers have also applied CL to the teaching practice and have made some effects.However,there still exist some deficits in the empirical application of cooperative learning in English reading class in senior high school,which needs further experimenting,Based on the application of cooperative learning in English reading class in senior high school in Yanbian,on the basis of relevant theories and experience,the researcher adopted experimental research to solve the problems of cooperative learning in English reading class and made an exploration to the effectiveness of CL.This research contains three questions(1)What are the perspectives of the students of Grade Two towards Cooperative Learning in English reading class before the experiment?(2)What are the attitudes of the students towards Cooperative Learning in English reading class after the experiment?(3)What are the effects of Cooperative Learning on students' English academic achievements including English reading scores and overall English scores?The research started from late August 2017 and lasted five months till January 2018.Students taught by the author from two paralleled classes of grade two took part in the experiment,Class Five is the experimental class with 10 boys and 30 girls featuring a reluctance to speak and a lack of initiative of grade two,in this class,cooperative learning was often used while Class Four is the controlled class in which students were taught in a traditional way.Having analyzed the current situation of CL in English reading class,the author applied CL to her teaching practice and,at the same time,provided detailed teaching procedure with case lesson.SPSS(24.0)was used to analyze the results of questionnaires and tests,besides,the researcher also used an interview as a supplement.The experiment achieved great effects after five months.First of all,by means of the experiment,students got a clear understanding of the component elements and procedure of Cooperative Learning and furthermore could apply Cooperative Learning craftily to their own studies.Secondly,the research showed that Cooperative Learning,if adopted reasonably and effectively,could change students' attitude towards English reading,promote students' enthusiasm towards English learning and stimulate students to take part in English learning actively and willingly,thus change the dull atmosphere in English reading class in the past.Lastly,it was also shown in this experiment that Cooperative learning could promote the understanding of the students towards learning materials,to a large extent,Cooperative Learning could boost the efficiency of English learning and also promote the grades of students' English reading as well as total scores,which could bring about some helpful guidance and reference to the teaching practice.However,due to several factors such as small sample and limited research time,there exist some deficits in this research that need to be improved in the near future.
