Fluency is a key indicator of the quality of simultaneous interpreting and it has a significant impact on how well the listeners take the speaker's message. When the speaker presents a logical and well-structured speech, the interpreter needs to be able to follow the speaker's streams of ideas and be equipped with sufficient background knowledge on the subject and information processing capacity.Otherwise, the fluency of the output could be compromised.Pauses that are too long or placed inappropriately are a major cause for the lack of fluency. This thesis focuses on reasons for inappropriate pauses in Chinese-English interpreting and suggests solutions for this problem. It analyzes factors in both inputs and outputs that lead to such pauses. Then,it discusses immediate and short-term interpreting assignment preparation as well as long-term effort for capacity improvement. The thesis looks at a Chinese-English simultaneous interpreting assignment the author performed for a Sunday sermon in Hongde Christian Church. It analyzes the causes for inappropriate pauses in her output, how she dealt with the situations on-spot as well as the effects on output. It also explores alternative options that can better the output quality and their applicability in future interpreting training exercises to improve output fluency in interpreting in general.
