This article takes the Korean re-edited version of “A Discourse in Chinese”,a General-purpose Chinese textbook,as an example to explore the realizing of localizing Chinese General-purpose textbooks to Country-specific textbooks. This study also has an enlightenment significance for the development of Country-specific textbooks and the adaption of different versions of a textbook from one main dition. The full article is divided into four chapters. The first chapter introduces the background of the selected topic, the significance of the topic, research object, methods and existing research results. The second chapter comprehensively compares the original edition and the adapted edition of the textbook, focusing on how the new version is adapted, the enlightenment that the adaption brings us and the evaluation of the new version. In terms of the content, the revised version basically copied the contents of the original version of each lesson, including words, phonetics, notes, grammar, and exercises. The differences are the translation of notes into Korean from English together with some revisions and improvements and an increase of a cultural section. In terms of the structure, both the overall structure and the unit structure are adjusted from the original version, which mark the most adapted part of the new version.Additionally, from the perspective of the quality and visual appearance of the book, the modified version was significantly better than the original. In summary,we can learn a lot from the adaption of the new version but still it is a shallow localization which needs improvement from some aspects, including the lack of specific explanation of language items and exercises. The third chapter marks the focal point of all the text.Specific suggestions for the further improvement of the adaption are put forward. That is to re-edit the book on the basis of the full use of the differences and connections of the Chinese and Korean languages and a wholly consideration of the characteristics of language of Korean learners to learn a foreign language. In respect of the phonetics, there should be a brief and detailed explanation on pronunciation of Chinese initials and finals as well as skills to pronounce the tones. Also the exercises of sound changes need to be reinforced and more targeted exercises to practice pronunciation are needed. In terms of vocabulary,in addition to ensuring the correctness of phonetic transcription of new words in the vocabulary, accuracy and completeness of part-of-speech tagging and interpretation, attention should also be paid to the word-building methods and the addition of necessary sentences as examples to some new words. The vocabulary exercises should also be well targeted. In terms of grammar, special attention need to be paid to the explanation and practice to Chinese word order, functional words and special sentence patterns. In terms of Chinese characters,it should be stressed in the textbook that Chinese characters are written in standardized stroke orders and it's better to copy and memorize them in the unit of words. On the cultural respect,Chinese culture should be introduced in an all-round way with more presentation of social life in contemporary China.Apart from the focus on interesting, the editor can also make full use of the cultural contrast between the Chinese and Korean cultures. The suggestions put in this chapter are also generally applicable to the editing or re-editing of Chinese textbooks for Korean learners.Based on the adapted version and in line with the above suggestions, the sub-reediting of different parts including phonetics, words, notes, grammar and culture are put into practice and some relating explanations are stated in the fourth chapter.
