The New English Curriculum Standards explicitly points out that teachers should try their best to enable students to contact and learn English from different sources as much as possible,and make students experience and use language.This is a higher requirement for teachers' oral English teaching.Oral English teaching can help students enrich their vocabulary,promote their listening skills,improve their writing ability,and cultivate their oral English expression ability so as to promote the development of the whole English teaching.Primary school English teaching is the foundation of all English teaching;therefore,primary school English teachers should attach importance to oral English teaching.However,oral English teaching is often not given due attention in primary schools,which leads to the low level of students' oral English ability and the widespread phenomenon of"Dumb English".These problems have severely restricted the development of English teaching in primary schools.Game is the nature of children.Applying games to English teaching can stimulate students' learning interest and arouse students' learning enthusiasm;at the same time,game teaching conforms to the characteristics of students' cognitive development.Therefore,more and more teachers are attempting to apply games to oral English teaching to promote the development of oral English teaching in primary schools.The study aims to do research into effects of games in primary school oral English teaching by analyzing research background,purpose and significance and reviewing domestic and foreign research,the relationship with oral English teaching,as well as the theory foundation of the research.The thesis mainly discusses two questions.The first one is to find out if games can arouse primary school students' interest in oral English learning.The second one is to find out if games can improve students' oral English achievements.In order to answer these two questions,the author carried out an empirical research in two classes of Grade Three in Xichuan Central Primary School.The whole research lasted for two and a half months.Class One was chosen randomly as experimental class,in which the teacher applied games to oral English teaching,and Class Two was chosen randomly as control class,in which the teacher still adopt traditional teaching method.In the process of the research,the author conducted two questionnaire investigations,two oral English tests and two classroom observations to collect research data,and then analyzed the data by SPSS statistics 19.The findings show that games can arouse students' interest in oral English learning and can improve students'oral English achievements as well.In addition,the research implicates that teachers in primary schools should apply games to stimulate students' learning interest so as to promote their teaching efficiency.At the same time,the research also implicates teachers to adopt games to improve students' oral English achievements.At last,the author proposes following suggestions.Firstly,get more convincing data to support future research on game teaching.Secondly,expand the scope of research objects.At last,the author hopes that more and more scholars can carry out the research of game teaching from different perspectives,and finally promote the development of oral English teaching.
