With the rapid advancement of modernization drive, the national force of China has stepped into a new high.China has gradually received greater attention from the international community which is eager to know the current situation and overall development of China. As a successful translation model of the publicity materials,Xi Jinping: The Governance of China invariably serves as a straight and authoritative information channel for the world to get a macroscopic view of China.Acting as a window to display the Chinese political principles, economic concepts and cultural connotations, vocabulary specific to Chinese politics express political ideas typical in Chinese society, highlighting the unique Chinese ideology, language and cultural characteristics and reflecting the development of Chinese political system. Therefore, its translation plays an important role in publicizing the image of China and promoting the cross-cultural communication and international cooperation. The thesis analyzes the English translation of vocabulary specific to Chinese politics in Xi Jinping: The Governance of China from the perspective of Adaptation Theory, trying to discuss the following three questions:first, what are characteristics and classification of vocabulary specific to Chinese politics in Xi Jinping: The Governance of China? Second, what translation methods do translators choose to adapt to contextual correlates, structural objects and dynamic adaptations? Third, why do translators adopt these translation methods and what effects of adaptation do they achieve? The structure of the thesis is as follows: first, the research background, research purpose, research significance and research questions are briefly stated in the introduction.Second, the previous studies on Adaptation Theory,Xi Jinping: The Governance of China and vocabulary specific to Chinese politics are reviewed by using literature research method.Third, the study gives a general explanation to Adaptation Theory.Fourth, according to linguistic characteristics and content, vocabulary specific to Chinese politics in the book are divided into numeral abbreviations, metaphorical words, proper nouns with modifier-core structure,subject-prominent proper nouns, proper nouns with verb object structures, proper nouns with coordination as well as proper nouns with supplementary structure.Fifth, after the characteristics of vocabulary specific to Chinese politics are elaborated, the study analyzes the translation approaches of each word by employing descriptive method, aiming at exploring the key factors for making adaptations. To make the research more convincing, the thesis conducts the frequency statistics and percentage analysis, figuring out what translation approaches translators prefer while making adaptation.Lastly, after the conclusions and limitations of the paper are put forward, feasible suggestions for future research are offered. It can be concluded that to make contextual adaptation, translators adopt literal translation, literal translation with annotation, literal translation plus embedded translation, amplification, free translation, restructuring, generalization, and omission.Furthermore,to make structural adaptation, amplification, restructuring, literal translation, free translation and replacement are used.In addition,to make dynamic adaptation, translators mainly prefer omission while translating vocabulary appearing for the second time. While translating quite a few metaphorical words or proper nouns that appear for the first time, literal translation is adopted to reappear the rhetorical effect and draw the attention of readers.Meanwhile, the study finds that while translating, translators adopt a variety of methods and sets forth a translation model according to the quantitative analysis on frequency, that is literal translation(with annotation translated)>free translation>structuring>amplification>omission>generalization> replacement=literal translation plus embedded translation.Last but not least, the popularity of the English translation of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China is the result of constant adaptation made by translators.Applying Adaptation Theory to the study of publicity text, the study is of great theoretical and practical significance, which not only broadens the scope and depth of descriptive study of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China, but also provides enlightenment for subsequent translation practice. The study aims to provide a reference for the construction of a Chinese political term bank too.
