A Representation Study Of Rural Image In The Poverty-Alleviation Documentary

Eradicating poverty and improving people's livelihood are the essential requirements of socialism and an important mission of the Chinese Communist Party.Since the 18th CPC National Congress,the Party Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping has placed the anti-poverty work in a more prominent position and has launched an anti-poverty campaign to realize comprehensive well-off and modernization.Against this background,a number of documentary films reflecting the process of poverty alleviation are starting to appear.These documentaries vividly recorded the fiery scenes of poverty alleviation,told the stories of poverty alleviation with Chinese characteristics and represented the image of poor villages,finally inspiring the audience to think deeply about the poverty alleviation.The poverty-reducing documentary mainly represented three kinds of countryside:not getting rid of poverty,will get rid of poverty,and have been lifted out of poverty.These three types stand for three stages of the poverty alleviation and to a certain extent,reflect the government's ability to solve the poverty issue.Therefore,the study on the rural image of these documentaries is of great significance for the public to understand the Chinese rural areas in the new period and the government to formulate poverty alleviation policies.This paper chooses seven documentaries which have been taken by the mainstream media since the 18th National Congress.By using the method of document analysis,case analysis and text analysis,the article analyzes the rural image of the documentary in more depth.The article mainly consists of three parts.The first part is "the object of representation",which elaborates the rural image from three aspects:rural landscape,villager image and cultural image,in order to explore what kind of the rural image which is represented in the documentaries.The second part is "the way of representation",which analyzes the main approaches of reproducing the rural image through the use of symbols,narrative structure and image rhetoric.The third part is "the reason for representation",which mainly discusses the influence on the representation of rural image from two aspects:state ideology and creator identity,in order to find the reason of why the documentaries represent the image of the country in this way.
