A Report On Translating Portable Ghosts

This is a translation project report on Portable Ghosts,a children's book of New Zealand's writer,Margaret Mahy,With the development of the world internationalized,culture exchange between countries has been strengthened,and for a long time in history,literary translation has become an important way in international cultural exchanges.To do well in literary translation is to build a bridge between different nations.An excellent work of literature translation can help to broaden people's horizon and promote culture exchange.This translation text belongs to a part of New Zealand literature,the author,Margaret Mahy was one of thirty writers who won the biennial,international Hans Christian Andersen Medal for her "lasting contribution to children's literature".Her works have been translated into German,French,Dutch,Norwegian,Danish,Swedish,Finnish,Italian,Japanese,and Afrikaans.In addition,some stories have been even translated into Russian,Chinese and Icelandic.Her works have become one of important parts in world's children's literature.So the translation of Portable Ghosts can not only make the translator have a deep understanding of children's literature in New Zealand,but also it can make the Chinese children get to the world's excellent literature and enrich their culture communication if the target text can be published one day.The report consists of five chapters.The first chapter is the task description,including project background,source text analysis,and significance.Chapter two is the part of process description,describing the process of pre-translation preparation,actual translation schedule and post-translation management.Based on Eugene Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory,chapter four explores and solves the translation difficulties from the equivalence at linguistic,stylistic and culture levels.The translation approaches adopted in this report include amplification,division,free translation,inversion,combination and omission.Chapter five is a conclusion part,which summarizes the experience gained by the author,limitations in the translated text,and the future efforts direction.
