| The significant role of news translation has become increasingly prominent in intercultural communication,through which China can quickly possesses the information of the international attitude towards it.Transediting is an effective method widely used in news translation practice.Mona Baker,a famous scholar of translation theory in the United Kingdom,breaks the traditional way of exploring translation standards from theories of linguistics and translatology and introduces the narrative theory into translation studies instead,infusing new vitality to the latter.With the continuous rise of China's international status,international concerns and reports on our country are increasing.In this thesis,the author selects news reports on the issue of the South China Sea from the column “China's diplomacy” in Reference News,an authoritative newspaper in China,in 2017 and their original English texts as research objects,using narrative theory to conduct a comparative study.At first,an overview of narrative theory,including its definition,typology and features,is elucidated,stating that narratives are produced through framing.Since news transedition contains the original news narrative and the transedited one,differences inevitably exist in the separate framing processes by their own narrators.That is to say,news transeditors will reframe the original news narrative.Therefore,the author explores what strategies are employed by transeditors of the column“China's diplomacy” in Reference News to reframe the original narrative.It is found that three out of four reframing strategies are frequently used,namely framing through selective appropriation,framing by labelling and repositioning of participants.Besides,factors influencing the reframing action are mainly concerned with ideological,cultural and narrative typological differences. |
