A Study On Disfluency In Simultaneous Interpreting From The Perspective Of Speech Production Model By Judit Kormos

Disfluency is prevalent in spontaneous speech and interpreting outputs.As simultaneous interpreting(SI)is a complicated cognitive process,the frequency of occurrence of disfluency in SI is much higher.Such disfluency types as pause,repetition,false start,restructuring,repair and lengthening can affect the quality of interpreting production and hinder listener's comprehension.It is necessary to have a research on the types,features and potential causes of disfluency in the SI process in order to help interpreters,trainee interpreters in particular,to be fully aware of the unique role of disfluency and have a good command of interpreting skills.The thesis sets out to analyze Kormos Speech Production Model,investigating disfluency from the perspective of second language acquisition and bilingual speech production.It reviews the model in detail and examines the internal process of SI so as to raise relevant hypotheses for disfluency in SI.An experiment is provided to check and supplement the assumptions.The thesis puts that pause is the most common type of disfluency in SI,with filled pause on the top.Repetition is more likely to occur in the SI production than such disfluency types as repair,restructuring and lengthening.False start occurs at the least frequency.Different disfluency types distribute randomly in the sentence but one disfluency can easily trigger more disfluencies in the following outputs.With regard to the reasons for disfluency in SI,the thesis argues from three perspectives.From L2 speech production aspect,disfluency turns out to occur at the conceptualizing,encoding,articulating and monitoring stage.From the SI side,the limitation of processing capacity,memory failure,negative impact of both the source language and the speaker and pressure from SI are main causes for disfluency.From the interpreter's own aspect,speaking habit,conscious use of strategy and a slip of tongue lead to disfluency in SI production.With attempts to offer relevant strategies to ease disfluency,the thesis can help enhance fluency and improve speech quality for SI interpreters,especially for trainee interpreters.
