A Report On Simulated Simultaneous Interpreting Practice Of Xi Jinping's Speech At The World Economic Forum 2017

With the development of economic globalization and China's growing national strength,interaction and communication between China and other countries in economy,trade,politics,culture and other sectors become increasingly frequent.Chinese leader now attends more international conferences and China's role in the global community has been strengthened.At the same time,the importance of simultaneous interpreting(SI for short)has improved because of its functions like transcending language differences and conveying information efficiently.In 2017,Xi Jinping attended World Economic Forum 2017 at Davos and delivered a keynote speech in which he stressed China's position to uphold opening up and economic globalization.The speech earned wide praise from the international community.According to the analysis of Xi Jinping's addresses in recent years,the author summarized the characteristics,including content,structure of speech,language style,and high-frequency expressions and reached the conclusion that this speech proves to be a challenging and meaningful material for a SI task.Hence,the author chooses Xi Jinping's Speech at the World Economic Forum 2017 as the material for the simulation.The complete simulation covers task description,pre-task preparation,process of the task and after interpreting management.From the perspective of Daniel Gile's "Effort Model",namely listening and understanding(L),short-term memory(M),target language production(P),the thesis discuses SI difficulties,how workload increases and how they influence each element.Through the analysis of difficulties,strategies and techniques are discussed with cases taken from the author's simulation practice to illustrate their functions on alleviating tensions to L,M and P.The thesis aims at exploring choice making of strategies and techniques for SI interpreters and providing solutions for common difficulties occurred in Chinese to English SI in international conference.Suggestions for improvement are summarized in order to make some contribution to SI teaching and training in the future.
