With the development of “going out” cultural strategy in China, cultural exchanges between the East and the West are getting more and more frequent. In recent years, more television documentaries have been introduced by major TV stations and the quality of their translated version is well-recognized because of their cooperation with professional translators.Besides, there is another force in China—the subtitle groups organized out of interest on the Internet. The features of online subtitle groups are voluntary,fast-produced,widely ranging over different topics. Therefore, the import of foreign television documentaries has been becoming more prevalent than ever before.By contrast,Chinese television documentaries have not become worldwide acknowledged.Although they are well-produced,the subtitle translation is not so satisfying as to cater to foreign audience mainly because of misinterpreting. There is another factor accounting for the unpopularity of Chinese television documentaries, that is,they haven't been translated yet.Nature Watcher is a series of domestic television documentaries of fine quality released on a national channel. However, those documentaries have not been translated so far.Guided by eco-translatology,the translator takes Chinese subtitles of two episodes from Nature Watcher as the source text and intends to find solutions to overcome the translation obstacles of culture-loaded words and phrases as well as screen time and space limits during her C-E translating process. From cultural dimension, the translator finds that skills like blocking, direct translation, cultural equivalence and paraphrasing, can help overcome cultural barriers. And from the communicative dimension, the translator adopts deduction as a translation strategy and these specific methods chosen are condensation, reductive paraphrasing, deletion, paraphrasing and selective abridging so as to help save screen time and space. It is hoped that the use of these translation strategies enlightens future translators of documentary subtitles.
