Nahan, the representative work of Lu Xun,has a significant status in the history of modern Chinese literature, and it is also the foundation of modern Chinese fiction and even the entire modern literature.A Madman's Diary, the first novel of Nahan,is universally acknowledged as the first work in the history of modern Chinese fiction,so when it comes to the modern Chinese literature,it is inevitable to talk about a novel collection,Nahan. Therefore,Nahan is translated into many languages by overseas and domestic scholars.Among the translated versions,Yangs' English version is widely accepted and recognized by readers,so the author selects Yangs' English version of Nahan as research object.German functionalist school views translation as a text produced for the target addressees in a target setting for a target purpose. The core principle determining the translation process is the skopos of the whole translational action. Thus, the selection of translation strategies and methods should take the realization of translation purpose as the supreme principle in the actual process of translation. In the light of Skopostheorie, the thesis studies the Yangs' English version of Nahan from the linguistic level and cultural level, aimed at analyzing who participate in the process of translation, what roles they play respectively, what translation purposes of translators are,and whether the translation strategies and methods the Yangs adopt could facilitate the realization of translation purpose of the target text and conform to the requirements of the three rules of Skopostheorie. The study finds that the pivotal participants involved in the process of translation include the foreign language press, the Yangs and the target addressee, that the translation purposes of translators are to disseminate Chinese culture and literature and satisfy the expectation of the target text addressee, that the Yangs adopt translation methods, such as literal translation, liberal translation, addition, omission,to deal with the translation problems in the linguistic level, and that the Yangs adopt translation strategies and methods, such as domestication, foreignization, transliteration, annotation, ellipsis,to deal with the translation problems in the cultural level. These translation strategies and methods conform to the requirements of the three rules of Skopostheorie and successfully realize the intended purpose of the target text. The success of the Yangs' English version of Nahan has some significant enlightenment towards the Chinese culture going out and the translation of Chinese literature.
