The development of modern information technology has promoted the prosperity of modern education. It provides 5not only strong technical support for the instructors but also a large number of learning resources for the learners, and breaks the limitation of time and space for learning.E-learning possesses the characteristics of convenience, openness, and autonomy, making it favored by educators and learners. With the development of massive open online courses(MOOCs),the global online learning boom has been triggered.More and more universities and Internet companies in China are joining the online learning and education.Although an increasing number of people have chosen online learning to acquire new knowledge, various problems still exist with this method, such as high dropout rates. This is mainly due to the fact that online learners are more often engaged in learning alone and the lack of necessary social interactions makes learners feel alone and helpless. In the process of learning, learners experience a variety of learning-related emotions. These emotions not only affect the learners' cognitive process, but even affect the learners' motivation, and then their learning. Therefore, this study mainly focuses on the emotion experiences in the online learning environment, and the influence of these emotion experiences on the effect of online learning. In addition, this study discusses the mediating role of self-control in the relation between emotions and online learning. This study consists of two studies. The aim of studyl is to reveal the common emotion experiences of learners in e-learning and the typical situations in which these emotion experiences appear,to compose emotion elicitation materials, and to further examine the effect of emotions on e-learning from the perspectives of emotional valence and emotional origin.Study 2,from the perspective of the learners, focuses on self-control and discusses the mediating role of self-control.Study 1 includes two experiments:the pre-experiment used an interview to clarify the emotions that learners often experience in e-learning and the typical situations those arise. The pre-experiment found that learners experienced more positive emotions than negative emotions in online learning. These emotions not only originated from learning contents, such as the difficulties of learning contents, the orderliness of learning materials, but also the learning environment, such as:the availability of learning platform, peer interaction, and teacher engagement.According to the results of the interview, the corresponding emotion elicitation materials were prepared, which could be used to induce the desired emotions well.Experiment 1 explores the influence of emotions on online learning from two perspectives.A 2(emotional valence:positive emotions vs.negative emotions)× 2(emotional origin:learning content vs.learning environment)between-subjects factorial design and a recall/imagination induced paradigm were adopted.Experiment 1 found that negative emotions could damage the effect of online learning, and the negative emotions originating from the learning environment exerted the most detrimental impact on online learning.Study 2 explored the role of self-control from the learners' perspectives.Experiment 2 used a 2(emotional valence:positive emotions vs.negative emotions)× 2(emotional origin:learning content vs.learning environment)between-subjects factorial design and discussed the effects of induced emotion on self-control and learning outcomes. It was found that negative emotions cause self-depletion and reduced self-control ability, while negative emotions originating from the learning environment had the greatest impact on self-depletion.However,this self-depletion could be compensated by taking in a proper amount of candy. However, the mediating role of self-control was not verified. In summary, this study shows that(1)learners experience positive and negative emotions in online learning, with more positive emotions than negative ones.(2)Using the recall/imagination induced paradigm can induce corresponding emotional experience,in which positive emotions can help improve recognition and migration, while negative emotions can adversely affect the recognition test and migration test. The impact of emotional origin on online learning is mainly reflected in the fact that negative emotions originating from the learning environment are the most detrimental to learning.(3)Induced positive emotions can reduce the learners' self-depletion and negative emotions promote self-depletion.Negative emotions originating from the learning environment have the most adverse impact on self-control,but such self-depletion can be compensated by the right amount of edible candy. This study focuses on the actual situation of online learning, and examines the influence of emotions on online learning which provides reference for the future construction of online learning environment. It is beneficial to improve the physical environment and social environment of online learning from the perspective of individual emotional experience. In addition,it provides a new reference to intervene in online learning. In the future, the online learning environment can appropriately interfere with the learners' emotional experience, thereby reducing the negative influence and improving the effect of online learning.
