A Report On The Translation Of Request For Proposal Of Blue Amber Holdings Pte Ltd

On the backdrop of global economic integration,with the accelerated development of China's opening up,more and more Chinese construction enterprises have started to go abroad to participate in the bidding process for international projects.In accordance with international practice,documents related to international projects are required to be written in English.Therefore,English-Chinese translation is of crucial importance to Chinese companies participating in the bidding.Request for Proposal(RFP)of Blue Amber Holdings Pte Ltd.is a proposal by Blue Amber to develop an integrated waste management facility in Singapore that requires suppliers to provide solutions to related problems.Chongqing Sanfeng Covanta Environmental Industry Co.,Ltd.intends to participate in the bidding and consigns Sichuan Lan-bridge Information Technology Co.,Ltd.to complete the translation of the document.This report is based on the theory of functional equivalence,taking the English-Chinese translation of the above RFP documents as an example,and then explores difficulties encountered by the author and translation techniques used during the translation process from lexical,syntactic and textual aspects.This report is divided into four chapters,which are the description of the task,translation process of the task,difficulties and solutions,as well as evaluation and suggestions.By listing difficulties with corresponding examples from different aspects,the author classifies them in the first place,and come up with some solutions to ensure the successful completion of the task.In the main part of this report,the author summarizes the translation techniques used to solve those difficulties concluded from three aspects based on the theory of functional equivalence.Lexical difficulties such as modal verbs and terminologies could be settled with analysis of modality and verification by tools.In syntactic terms,translation of long sentences can be combined with literal translation and liberal translation to achieve the balance between the form and meaning.Word order for sentences of passive voice can be adjusted to suit the expression of the target language.In discourse,the translation of such texts should focus on coherence.With regard to the textual difficulties as coherence,attention shall be paid to the connectives to ensure coherence of the translation.Some of the translation techniques guided by the theory of functional equivalence are summarized by the author during the translation practice and reflection,which could serve as references for the translators to produce a better translation of bidding documents.
