A Report On The Translation Of Documents For The 7th China(Linyi) International Trade And Logistics Fair

Against the backdrop of growing economic globalization,more opportunities are provided by international exhibitions for international trading companies to raise their profiles overseas and to look for global purchasers.Since exhibition translation bridges the communication for the exhibitors,purchasers and attendees at home and abroad,it plays an important role during the process of international fairs.The report is written based on the author's translation practice during the period of 7th China(Linyi)International Trade and Logistics Fair(referred as ‘CLITLF')from August 10,2016 to October 1,2016.The author has accomplished a translation task of different types of documents,including invitation letters,news releases,advertising videos subtitles,and publicity brochures,with the amount of translation task being about 30,000 words.Besides the author,there were four other translators participating in the translation.And translation quality was ensured by measures,including frequent communication among translators,and effective proofreading procedure.Under the guidance of skopos theory,the report firstly analyzed translation purposes which should be the sum of purposes of six roles,including initiator,commissioner,ST producer,TT producer,user and receiver.In this translation project,purposes of the initiator and TT receivers were dominant.The initiator,that is,the organizing committee of 7th CLITLF,aimed to communicate the exhibition information to the public and to attract more exhibitors,purchasers and attendees from home and abroad to participate in the exhibition by using these documents,and TT receivers' purposes were to get the information of the fair from exhibition documents and to decide if they would participate in the exhibition.Consequently,translation purposes were incarnated in the achievement of functions of different documents.Thereafter,based on the text typology,translated documents can be categorized into two major texts types: informative texts and operative texts.Informative texts were published for conveying information of the 7th CLITLF to participants.The TT function of informative texts should be “content-focused”,and the translation method should make the target text plain and explicit.Whereas,operative texts were used to expand the influence of the CLITLF and to attract more participants.The TT of these operative texts should elicit desired response from TT receivers,and its translation method should be “adaptive” and achieve appellative effects of TT.From the perspectives of skopos theory and text typology,effective translation strategies were chosen to deal with problems encountered in translating different texts.Firstly,in translating invitation letters,different information orders and language features between ST and TT required adjustments of text structures and courtesy expressions,so the author reconstructed the text structures and omitted the redundant information of courtesy expression parts in translation to realize the informative function of invitations;secondly,due to different language characteristics and information logic between ST and TT,translation difficulties of news releases were headlines and news leads.The author revised headlines and adjusted the information logic of news leads in translation to effectively report the information to public;thirdly,in translating advertising videos subtitles,since reservation of long sentences and political words could cause the desynchronization between subtitles and pictures of videos,and rhetorical devices of ST restrained the achievement of appellative effect in TT,the author adopted division of long sentences,omission of political words,and transformation of rhetorical devices of ST to realize the operative function of TT;finally,in translating publicity brochures,the author adopted addition of cultural background information and reservation of dilogism of ST to achieve the appellative effect of publicity brochures.Although the work of translation group won the recognition from the organizing committee,there were still some problems unsolved and thus relevant suggestions were put forward accordingly by the author.Besides,it is concluded that both skopos theory and text typology provide significant theoretical guidance to exhibition translation practice,since it is great chance that an exhibition translation project includes different types of texts.Additionally,as translators' bilingual cultural competencies,critical thinking,even personal values are also important factors for the achievement of translation,it is important for the translator to keep improving his overall qualities.Furthermore,based on the author's experience and reflection,the report is expected to provide a reference for exhibition translation practice.
