| In this translation project report,the source text is“The Civilization of China”,chapter five of China:Its State and Prospects,written by Walter Henry Medhurst,a British Missionary,a great translator and a well known sinologist in the 19th century.This book gives a comprehensive introduction to Chinese culture.For example,the book puts forward the“three major inventions,”the compass?Sinan?,gunpowder,and printing,which is about 100 years earlier than the“four inventions”,proposed by the famous Cambridge university professor,Joseph Needham.The fifth chapter elaborates on Chinese etiquette,art,tea,porcelain,medicine,painting,silk,etc.from the perspective of a foreigner.In addition,there is no Chinese version of the book.Selecting the text as a translation project aims to reveal the historical process of the knowledge construction of“China's Image”in the 19th century by western people,and also to provide a first-hand historical material for relevant researchers who are committed to studying the history of cultural exchanges between China and the West in the 19th century.This report introduces the background and content of the translation project.Guided by Eugene Nida's functional equivalence theory,it discusses the difficulties in the process of translation and discusses the methods to solve it.This report mainly contains introduction,including project background,goals and significance.Txt analysis mainly introduces the source text,the author,the text types and the linguistic style.And the theoretical guidance of this project and the role it plays in the translation.Difficulties in translation and the methods.The proper nouns,terms,cultural-loaded expressions,passive voice and long sentences,heavily employed in the source text,are main difficulties in translation.Therefore,the translator resorts to various translation skills with the guidance of functional equivalence theory.Finally,summarizes the lessons and unsolved problems in the translation project. |
