| This thesis is a practice report based on the Chinese-English translation on China Red Flag Canal(Excerpt)under the guidance of functional equivalence theory. From the perspective of Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory, this paper studies the Chinese-English translation of documentary literature, especially the application of translation strategies and techniques in literary translation.China Red Flag Canal, compiled by Zheng Xiong,is a documentary literature. It moves forward in a rational and concise style, reproducing the construction story of this River of Heaven Red Flag Canal, which is a highly readable,high-grade documentary work with its unique artistic charm and typical style and is an excellent specimen of documentary literature. This book has won the second session of Du Fu literature prize in 2016.The author of the original text quotes classical Chinese paragraph, and expressed in a very characteristic Chinese literature style. How to perfectly convey native Chinese description to English readers and achieve equivalence in meaning, form, style and reading experience is a great challenge for translators. The functional equivalence theory, first proposed by Eugene A.Nida,a famous America linguist. The essence of this theory mainly emphasizes the functional equivalence of information instead of the direct formal equivalence in translation. The relationship between the targeted language receptor and the targeted text should generally be equivalent to that between the source language receptor and the source text.Regarding to literature translation,it seems to be a proper way for translators to convey the original author’s thoughts and contents.Under the guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence theory, the author has successfully completed the C-E translation, and explored the difficulties encountered in the translation process from three levels of vocabulary, syntax and discourse. In the report, case studies are carried out with representative examples, and then feasible translation strategies and techniques are proposed.Lexically, this report mainly discusses the amplification, omission and conversion of word class;Syntactically, the author mainly focuses on sentence order adjustment, combination and division;Textually, the case studies are mainly focused contextual coherence and information reorganization.Through the analysis of the above three levels, the author uses specific translation strategies and skills under the guidance of functional equivalence theory to achieve the most natural equivalence for readers. |
