A Report On Escort Interpreting For Chengdu Research Base Of Giant Panda Breeding

With the successful carrying out of China's reform and opening-up policy,international cooperation and exchanges have been deepened,and China's foreign affairs have developed by leaps and bounds.Frequent political dialogues,business negotiations and tourism can be found every day in almost every big city in China.Interpreting is playing an increasingly essential role.The aim of escort interpreting is not merely delivering an introduction to the attractions,but also helping foreign visitors to get over the linguistic barriers and authentically understand local cultures.Therefore,since the objective of each interpreting task varies,the interpreting strategies and techniques would not be the same.Interpreters should adopt different interpreting methods in accordance with the actual interpreting situations.In the light of the Skopos Theory,on the basis of the author's interpreting experiences,it is intended to probe into effective strategies or techniques to solve the problems encountered by the author by means of analysis and comparison.Through detailed analysis and study,the following conclusions are generated.First of all,interpreters should choose different interpreting strategies or techniques in accordance with the listener's language norm and the aim of the mission.Secondly,interpreters should provide detailed or simple interpreting to the listeners regarding the different situations.Thirdly,Skopos Theory can guide interpreting to a certain degree.Finally,interpreting should be purpose-oriented and listener-oriented.This report consists of five chapters.The first chapter is the background description of this interpreting project.Chapter Two describes the process of interpreting which involves the different stages of the project.The third chapter is an overview of Skopos Theory which is the theoretical guidance of this report.Chapter Four is the case study of the interpreting practice,in which the problems encountered in the process of interpreting are analyzed and studied from the perspective of Skopos theory.Chapter Five is the summary and reflection of this interpreting project,including self-assessment and some suggestions for the future interpreting practice.On the basis of the above research,it is believed that mastering solid language skills is far from enough to be a qualified interpreter,professional interpreters should strengthen their capability of cross-cultural interactions.It is hoped that this report will provide valuable reference for other escort interpreters.
