The source text of this translation report is the first part of The Secret Life of the Mind: How your brain Thinks,Feels and Decides,a bestseller written by Mariano Sigman.With vivid cases,he interprets for the readers how human minds develop.Being a popular science book,the source text can be categorized as informative text.But in this source text,the application of English double-dash structures is its most distinctive feature.The double-dash structures are more frequently used in English than Chinese.Meanwhile,the cohesive functions of double-dash structures are different between English and Chinese.So the translator adopted different strategies to translate them guided by their cohesive functions.According to the cohesive functions of punctuation,the translation report mainly explores the translation strategies for translating double-dash structures.This report mainly contains five parts: introduction,task description,the cohesive functions of double-dash structures,strategies for translating double-dash structures and conclusion.In the task description,the background of the task and the features of the source text are introduced.The cohesive functions of double-dash structures include the cohesive functions of punctuation and the application of double-dash in English and in Chinese.Strategies for translating double-dash structures is the main part of this report,in which the translator applies transplantation,deletion,addition and conversion to translate double-dash structures.Finally,the author makes a conclusion of the gains and limitations of this translation practice.
