As a language service activity, interpreting should regard clients' needs as the criterion of quality evaluation. When the listeners evaluate the quality of an interpreting, the first thing they can judge is whether the interpreting is fluent. If too many pauses, repetitions or meaningless modal particles such as "um" and "ah" occur in interpreting, they will definitely affect the client's subjective feelings and their access to information, thus the purpose of language services will not be achieved. Therefore, the fluency of interpreting is of great importance. For a long time, although the concept of "fluency"has been frequently talked about,it is lack of systemic research for only being considered as a "superficial" criterion of interpreting. Therefore, the fluency of interpreting deserves more in-depth study.Although there are many researches on the disfluency in interpreting both at home and abroad, most focus on the disfluency in simultaneous interpreting.Little researches were done on the disfluency in consecutive interpreting.Besides, these researches are mainly concerned with the interpreting between Indo-European languages while lack of researches on the disfluency of English-Chinese interpreting.Since the advent of Daniel Gile's Effort Model, most of the studies about this model are applied to simultaneous interpreting, while few aims at consecutive interpreting. And the majority of studies focus on preliminary preparations before interpreting,notes-taking and short-term memory, while few researches focus on the disfluency in consecutive interpreting. In view of this circumstance, this thesis aims to explore the disfluency in the simulated consecutive interpreting of 2017 Hubei Provincial government work report under the guidance of Effort Model. This thesis takes the Effort Model as theoretical guidance, which introduces the four efforts in this model, namely listening and analysis effort, memory effort, production effort and coordination effort and discusses the "Tightrope Hypothesis" to explore the disfluency in consecutive interpreting.By comparing the source text and the recording of the interpreting, the author summarizes three main manifestations of the disfluency in this consecutive interpreting:pauses, repetition and self-repairs.And the author analyzes the causes of disfluency:on one hand, since the government work report is characterized with high information density, high information complexity and the report lasts for a long time, the author works under cognitive overload which results in disfluency in interpreting;on the other, the author fails to properly coordinate her limited attention in the four efforts which makes the author attend to one thing while lose the other, and thus leading to disfluency in interpreting.Under the guidance of Effort Model, the author proposes the strategies to solve these difficulties:sufficient preparation before interpreting, omission and generalization, grasping the main information in comprehension phase, taking notes in a logical way and coordinating efforts between short-term memory and notes-taking.Based on these difficulties and strategies,it is concluded that the smooth interpreting must be based on adequate cognitive reserve and reasonable attention allocation. The lack of related cognitive knowledge and unreasonable attention allocation of the four efforts will lead to disfluency of interpreting.Taking Gile's Effort Model as the theoretical basis, this thesis will make use of the examples from the simulated interpreting to analyze the causes of the disfluency in consecutive interpreting and propose corresponding strategies,in the hope of providing some inspirations for related theoretical and practical researches on coping with disfluency in consecutive interpreting.
