Fluency plays an important role in interpreting quality assessment and acts as the audience's first impression of interpreting performance.Disfluencies,such as pauses,repetitions and self-repairs will affect the quality of interpreting production and hinder the audience's comprehension.Current studies on disfluency mainly focus on the disfluency in simultaneous interpreting while the disfluency in consecutive interpreting lacks sufficient attention.As disfluency is one of the salient problems trainee interpreters may encounter,it is necessary to conduct a deep analysis of its characteristics,common types and reasons.It is expected that the study can help students achieve better knowledge of dislfuency thus reducing dislfuency in interpreting output.This thesis aims to study disfluency in C-E consecutive interpreting.Through the experiment,it is found out that silent pauses turn out to be the most common type of disfluency in C-E consecutive interpreting,with filled pauses ranking the second and self-repairs and repetitions following next.What's more,under some circumstances disfluencies don't come alone.Silent pauses are likely to come together with other types of disfluency.It is also found out that silent pauses and speech rate have an inverse relation.The more silent pauses are made,the lower the speech rate is.According to the Effort Model,reasons that cause disfluency are concluded from three perspectives,including insufficient linguistic ability,cognitive overload and improper energy distribution.Based on the analysis above,corresponding coping strategies are put forward from the following five aspects,including linguistic and extra-linguistic knowledge,prefabricated chunks,numbers,deverbalization and proper fillers.
