With the rapid increase of transportation volume highway traffic and large-tonnage vehicles, especially the canalized operation of high-grade highway traffic, quite a number of highways are suffering serious potential structural damages under the heavy traffic, which affects the use performance and service life of pavement, and causes enormous economic loss to the highway construction.MLSS66 Large Full-scale Accelerated Pavement Test(APT)Equipment can experimentally accelerate the pavement damage through the rapid loading of controllable axle load in a relatively short period of time, and really simulate the running conditions of vehicles on the road, thus providing true data models for the analysis of pavement structure and so on.Therefore, the proper operation of the APT equipment system plays an extremely important role in the process of research on the pavement accelerated loading test system.MLS66 Operator's Manual is the standard guideline of the Large Full-scale APT Equipment newly purchased by Changsha University of Science and Technology. The Operator's Manual is a typical scientific research article and informative text. The Operator's Manual introduces conditions of the APT Equipment in eight aspects in detail, including Machine Overview,Controls,Machine Power,Moving the Machine,Machine Setup for APT,Running an APT,Summary of maintenance activities and Maintenance Instructions. The theoretical knowledge of practical operation and maintenance is supplied to detail for learning by professionals who operate the equipment.Because this manual is important for actual mechanical operation and there is only an English version at present, the translator's choice of the Operator's Manual as the translation and research object is of great practical significance.Based on the understanding above, the translator attempted to consider the Theory of Linguistic Adaption proposed by Verschueren,a Belgian linguist,as the theoretical orientation of translation practice.Verschueren believes that the Theory of Linguistic Adaption is as follows." Consciously or unconsciously, the use of language is a process in which the language user constantly selects.language for internal and external reasons of language.Such selection can occur at any level of language structure, and can be a language form or the selection of language strategies." Natural languages have three characteristics, including variability, negotiability and adaptability, and can be analyzed in four dimensions, including contextual correlates of adaptability, structural objects of adaptability, dynamics of adaptability and salience of adaption processes. Therefore, the translation of the Operator's Manual must realize the function of information conveying of the source text. The content should be accurate, and the expression should be natural. In order to achieve the purpose of adaption between the source text and the translation, the translator paid special attention to the translation of vocabulary, sentence pattern and text structure of the Operator's Manual from four dimensions, and realized the adaption of the translation to the source text. This report consists of five parts. The first part briefly describes the relevant background of translation tasks and the selection of text. The second part introduces the work and process before translation, during translation and after translation. The third part discusses the Theory of Linguistic Adaption and its related researches. The fourth part solves the problems in the translation process of MLSS66 Operator's Manual from the application of four dimensions of the Theory of Linguistic Adaption, including contextual correlates of adaptability, structural objects of adaptability, dynamics of adaptability and salience of adaption processes. The fifth part mainly reviews strategies to solve the problems encountered and inspiration in the translation process.
