A Report On C-E Translation Of An Operator's Manual For Mobile Power Station (Chapter Three-Chapter Eight)

With the accelerating development in imports and exports for the globalization in economy,a quantity of electric power products are exported to neighbouring nations around China,leading to a thriving development in the translation of operator's manual.This translation report is an operative manual for the operation of a mobile power station to Pakistan.As an important branch of sci-tech text,the manual should both possess the general features of sci-tech ones and the typical characteristics of instructions.On the basis of words,sentences and discourse,an analysis to textual and linguistic features of source and parallel texts should be made with the purpose to guide users to properly operate the station in the before-translation period.While in the second stage,considering the nature of communication in translation with the communicative processes among the source text,translator,the target text and its reader,the translator,as an intermediary,should find some cooperation relations to achieve the goal of communicating.Thus,the Cooperative Principle is applied to guide the translation process mainly with the literal translation to convey source meaning.Such problems as category words and verbs at the lexical level,fuzzy and negative expressions and non-subject sentences at the semantic level,and some other problems in the discourse are solved after analyzing difficult points and applying specific skills in translation including addition,omission,combination,shift and so on.And the target text should follow or violate some maxims of the Cooperative Principle to get a version in high quality with the aim to communicate and to safely guide the operation of the station.In the after-translation period,the main task is to ensure the accuracy and idiomaticity of target language,and avoid ambiguity and obscure of expression with the assistance of self-revision,other-revision and relevant quality control processes in the translation.Given the lack of corresponding cultural and ideological information in such manuals with informative and operative features,the most important deserved point in translation should be conveying accurate and complete information based on an assurance to mutual-cooperation for the final communicative purpose to safely operate the product.
