In recent years,with the development of education of teaching Chinese as a foreign language,a large number of textbooks for foreigners have emerged.English translation of new words is an important part for many textbooks for foreigners.Accurate English translation of new words can help foreign students understand and grasp Chinese new words quickly,but simple and inaccurate translation not only fails to achieve the intended purpose,but also makes learners fail to grasp the meaning of words and can produce all kinds of errors.Many studies have shown that there are many problems in the English translation of the new words.Therefore,the study of English translation of new words is of great significance.In this paper,the author takes the English translation of new words in Developing Chinese Intermediate Speaking Course(I)(II)as the research material,and discuss the problems existing in the English translation of new words in these two textbooks,and put forward some revising suggestions,hoping to provide some references for textbooks editors,overseas students and teachers.The paper consists of five chapters:The first chapter is introduction,which mainly introduces the origin and significance of the topic,the material of this study,the current status of the research and the characteristics and innovation of this paper.The author first introduces the importance of the new words' translation in textbooks and points out the significance of this research,and then introduces the reasons of selecting these research materials,and finally points out the characteristics and innovations of the thesis.The second chapter mainly introduces the research theories and research methods in this paper.The research theories include TCFL vocabulary teaching theory,translation theory and lexical semantics theory.The research methods include literature research method,Chinese English comparison method,induction method and questionnaire method.The third chapter analyzes the translation of new words in textbooks from three aspects:the way of English translation is too simple;the English translation is not accurate enough;the English translation is not complete enough.The author gives examples of the English translation in these three aspects,explains the reasons and puts forward some revisions.The fourth chapter mainly is the questionnaire,which is based on the analysis of the the third chapter.The questionnaire includes subjective and objective questions.Subjective questions are mainly the opinions and suggestions on English translation of new words from respondents.Most objective questions are from the textbooks,mainly on the effects of English translation of new words on respondents.Finally,the author collates and summarizes data of the questionnaire.The fifth chapter,the author discusses the countermeasure from two aspects according to the problems of English translation of new words in the textbooks : one is the textbook translation pattern should be diversified,such as “corresponding word+ semantic description”,“the corresponding word + synonyms”,“word + collocation","word + Notes" etc.A variety of ways of translation can avoid single and simple translation,thus effective helping learners understand and use new words;the second aspect is that teachers should enrich the teaching content.Teachers first should have a clear mind on key words and non-key words and explain the key words.According to the learners' requirements on the higher language level,teachers also should teach new words in the aspect of pragmatic communication,synonym discrimination and cultural connotations.
