Study On EST Long Sentence Translation From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

This thesis is a report of English to Chinese translation.The choice of the source text of the project represents the combination of the university's distinctive features of shipbuilding industry,marine equipment,ocean exploration and nuclear energy application and the professional needs of our research direction.The technical English text mainly introduces the naval aviation maintenance plan operations related operating procedures.Based on Skopos theory and comparative analysis of both the source and target text,this report analyzes and summarizes the whole translation practice.Long sentences are the prominent features of this practice,while the translation of them into English has always been the focus and difficulties in English to Chinese translation.Therefore,the author takes the translating practice of naval aviation maintenance as examples,further explores the translation methods of long sentences in EST based on Skopos theory,with the aim to provide relevant experience and reference for science and technology English translation practices.This thesis consists of five parts.The first part introduces the importance of EST and marine engineering science and technology.The second part is the translation task description.This part includes the introduction to the background of the task,text analysis,selection criteria for translation materials,preparation of translation tools,references and specific arrangements for the translation plan.The third part is the introduction to translation theory.The fourth part is example analysis.According to the translation principles and standards under the guidance of Skopos theory,this part analyzes the translation method of long sentences in science and technology texts deeply.Based on the analysis of examples,it illustrates the commonly-used translation methods for long sentences in EST.The fifth part is the summary of the whole thesis,which summarizes the main steps to complete the translation task and five guidelines are summed up accordingly.
