The translation of long English academic sentences is an inevitable part in the process of translating English academic works.In view of this,the thesis,based on the English-Chinese translation practice and with the translation of long English academic sentences as the object of study,explores specific and feasible methods suitable for translating long English academic sentences under the guidance of Skopos theory.Firstly,the thesis makes in general an overview of Skopos theory,especially the basic principles it advocates.Then,the thesis expounds the characteristics of long English academic sentences in terms of content,structure and language,and further,from the perspective of Skopos theory,discusses the characteristics and purposes of translating long English academic sentences.After this,the thesis,through the analysis of specific examples,specifically discusses what appropriate methods the translator can employ to translate long English academic sentences under the guidance of three basic principles of Skopos theory.It is held in the thesis that,with regard to the translation of long English academic sentences,the translator can follow the fidelity rule in terms of content and correspondingly translate them by the use of annotation and contextual amplification.In terms of form,the translator can follow the coherence rule and translate them by the use of order rearrangement and logical restructuring.And in terms of language,the translator can follow the Skopos rule and translate them by the use of specialized terminology and concise expressions.On the basis of the theoretical explanation and empirical analysis,the thesis finally concludes that Skopos theory is quite applicable for and can provide practical guidance for the translation of long English academic sentences.The translator should adhere to three basic principles of Skopos theory with clear consciousness,and correspondingly translate long English academic sentences by the effective use of six appropriate methods mentioned,so as to eventually produce the corresponding translation versions with high quality and reliability.The study conducted in the thesis is a beneficial exploration on the translation of long English academic sentences.The findings or conclusions of this study are of practical value to some extent,and maybe provide a positive reference on methodology for the translation of long English academic sentences.
